Obituary

Evan Joseph Gerstein passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on November 27, 2018 at the age of 17. Evan is the beloved son of Mary Rafferty Gerstein and Bob Gerstein, and the loving brother of Jackson Gerstein. He will forever be the cherished grandson of Joyce and Allen Gerstein, Judy and Jim Rafferty and, proceeded in death, by Irene Rafferty. He is the adored nephew and cousin of the Rafferty and Gerstein extended families. Evan is a dedicated friend to his Walter Payton College Prep and Near North Montessori communities.

While Evan’s life has been cut painfully short, he lived purposefully and passionately guided by kindness, humor, authenticity and an unending intellectual curiosity. He will be remembered for his love and commitment to family and friends, academic excellence, a fanatic loyalty to the Cubs, Grizzlies and Wolverines, and an unquenchable thirst for playing soccer and skiing the world’s toughest terrains. Evan’s tenacity in the face of adversity and strength of character in all circumstances leaves a legacy of inspiration for all of us. The Rafferty/Gerstein family will be forever grateful for the outpouring of support, prayers and love that surround them at this difficult time.

Messages

Evan meant the world to me, Ryan, Catie and Ben. He lives on through the legacy he left all of us. To me, he leaves an inspiration of a life well led and the love he freely gave. Everything he did, every thing he was, was a testament of all the love and support from Mary, Bob and Jackson. Although Evan will be missed terribly, I will always remember his bright smile and wisdom he had since a very young age. Now he watches over us with Grandma Irene until we join him again in heaven. Most sincere prayers and love are extended to Mary, Bob and Jackson. You all are the best family that I could hope to have.

Therese McKenzie (Evan's adoring Aunt)
