Miyeko Ito Sumita
Miye died on Sept. 3, 2009 in Thousand Oaks, CA. she was 86 yrs. old.
Miye was born in Ogden, Utah on May 2, 1923 to Nizaemon and Hana Ito.She was born third of nine children. Miye left Utah after graduating from Weber high school and went to New York City to work in the clothing industry. She became a seamstress and made wedding dresses and evening gowns. Miye prided herself in being able to make tailored women’s suits and most of my sister and my clothing.
She met and married James Jiro Sumita on September 18, 1955, in Chicago, Ill. Where they had three children, Karen, Alyce & Jim. She received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Mundelein College in Chicago when she was in her 50’s. Miye taught hearing impaired students at Whitney Young High School, a Chicago Public High School, for 10 years.
Jim and Miye retired to Thousand Oaks, CA. in 1989. She enjoyed her new chapter in life, as a grandmother in 1990. She doted on her grandchildren, James, Jason, James Nathanial & Miye Nicole. Miye decided that she wanted to be creative in another way and took classes in painting at the local senior center, where she also made new friends. Her paintings were mostly Japanese themed in nature and she really enjoyed working with paints.
Miye is survived by her husband of 54 years James; children; Karen, Alyce & Jim; son-in-laws: Kevin and Glenn; daughter-in-law: Sheri; grandchildren: James, Jason, Nathan & Nicole; Siblings: Natsuko, Aki, Toyo, Dean, Sam.
Services and viewing will be held at Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks Memorial Park Chapel, 5600 Lindero Canyon Rd., Westlake Village, Ca. on Fri. Sept. 18th, viewing is from
3 – 4 pm and service from 4 – 5 pm. Miye will be cremated and buried in Chicago.
Memorial Visitation Oct. 16th Friday from 10 am until memorial service at 11 am both at Lakeview Funeral Home 1458 W Belmont Ave. Chicago, Il. 60657.
After the service, Interment of cremated remains at Montrose Cemetery 5400 N Pulaski Rd. Chicago, Il. 60639
