Obituary

John T. Doss, 68, died June 2, 2007 after battling cancer for many years with grace, determination and courage. He served in the United States Marine Corp and the United States Army and was cared for professionally and compassionately at the Lakeside and Westside VA Hospitals as he fought his illnesses.

Born in Arkansas, he liked to say he had made it from Tobacco Road to the Magnificent Mile. John was head of construction for Illinois Center, one of the city’s first successful mixed use developments, and later a general contractor. He could solve most any problem with his ingenuity and resourcefulness. He was a thoughtful friend, took good care of his clients and neighbors and was always ready with a story or a good laugh. He loved his cocker spaniels, painting, travel, politics and gardening. His garden and waterfall were on the Sheffield Garden Walk for many years, which gave him great pleasure.

John is survived by his friend and companion, Lee Dickson; his dear sister, Shirley Doss, and other siblings; his daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Allen Fisher; grandchildren, Gabriel and Tristan; and his son, John Stephen Doss.
