Obituary

Catherine Anne McGuire (nee Griffin), 74, of Chicago, IL died peacefully on January 27th, 2018 after a brief battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis McGuire, her sisters Carolyn (Marvin) Andrews, Sylvia (the late Fred) Neally, Connie (the late Arthur) Casillas, and brother Mark Griffin. She is survived by her siblings, Burton (the late Patricia) Griffin, Mary (the late Tom) Malizia, Patricia Dixon, Jon (Jane) Griffin and several nieces and nephews. She was the devoted mother to daughters Peggy (Rich) Balind, Annie (Tom) Capone, Eileen (Steve) Schwartz, Sarah (Jack) Fenn, and Denise McGuire. She is also survived by her true loves, her six grandchildren – Ryan and Julia Capone, Nick and Emily Schwartz, and Riley and Johnny Fenn along with her two grand dogs, Rocky and Jet.

She graduated from Emerson High School in 1964, and after staying home to educate her girls in the art of hard work, compassion, kindness, and patience, she received her STNA certificate from Cincinnati State Technical College in 2000 because she felt that “it was a good way to help people”. She moved back to Northwest Indiana and enjoyed being a nurses’ aide at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Hobart, IN for 13 years before retiring to Chicago. In Chicago, she became an active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, singing in the choir, ushering, and participating in the Eucharistic Ministry. Cathy was always seen around the East Lakeview neighborhood walking three miles daily either with her daughter’s dog, Rocky or to a nearby senior social event. She enjoyed traveling with her daughters and their families to the beaches, the mountains, the National Parks, and to the lakes creating fond, long-lasting memories.

Cathy was driven, energetic and dedicated to her family, friends and to her wonderful church community.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital for their loving, attentive treatment.

A wake will be held on Monday, February 5 from 4-9 PM at Lakeview Funeral Home, 1458 West Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL. The Rosary will be said at 8:00 PM.

The funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, February 6 at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 708 West Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL. Interment is private. Info – 773-472-6300 or www.LakeviewFuneralHome.com.

Anne i'm so sorry for the passing of your mom. My thoughts and prayers are with you, your sisters and the rest of the family. You will find that in time, your mom is all around you, in a phrase that she said, you find yourself saying. Her favorite season, bird, flower or holiday. And many other daily events, that will bring tears, smiles and laughter. 💕

Nothing I can say will ease the pain of such a great loss but know you and the family are in my prayers. I’m so glad I had a chance to meet her if only for a few brief moments.

I’m very, very sorry for your loss. Your family has been in my thoughts since I heard about your Mom. Aunt Catherine always treated me so well, and was always laughing! Your parents were kind enough to let me put a new roof on their house. I know it helped me out (and I trust it never leaked!). I hope you take solace in the fact that she was so lovable and was loved by many.

One of my oldest friends & her family have experienced a great loss...Mrs McGuire was quite the woman, she was small in stature but there was nothing else small about her. Her love for her family was HUGE and came before everything else! My love & prayers go to each of you and your families. Eileen Schwartz, Anne Capone, Peggy, Sarah, & Denise.
