Fischer, Elvera
Elvera Fischer, nee Lampe, age 97, at rest on May 14, 2016. Beloved wife of the late Maurice Fischer; loving daughter of the late Theodore and Rose (Groene) Lampe; devoted sister to Luella (Evans), and the late Marcella (Santiago) and Lloyd Fischer; fond aunt to Anita Evans, Roger Santiago (Janet Roberson) and the late Michelle and Cherie Evans and David Santiago.
Elvera Fischer grew up on a farm in West Point, Iowa, attended the University of Iowa, and studied nursing at the Mayo clinic. After receiving her RN, she accepted a job as a visiting nurse in Chicago, providing care for the poor and indigent. Subsequently recruited by United Airlines, Elvera was chosen as a member of DC-3 Rare Birds, an elite group of stewardesses, whose mission was to “Keep ‘Em Flying”. On a flight originating out of South Bend, Indiana, Elvera met the love of her life, “Ritz” Fischer, an editor at Chicago’s award-winning paper, the Daily News. Elvera was a charter member of the American Association of Medical Assistants, and Illinois state president. During her retirement years, Elvera dedicated many volunteer hours to her parish church and school at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Chicago.
Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 708 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL at 12noon on Saturday, May 21 immediately followed by Mass at 12:30pm. Contributions in memory of Elvera may be sent to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Academy, 720 W. Belmont Avenue, Chicago, IL 60657.
