Fumiyo Uchida, 87, of Kumamoto, Japan passed away peacefully on November 28, 2015 in her home in Chicago after a brave struggle with cancer.
A wake will be held on Saturday, December 12 from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at Lakeside Church of Chicago, located in Skokie at 3939 W. Howard St., Skokie, IL 60076.
Fumiyo graduated second in her class from the University of Shizuoka, Japan, with a degree in pharmacy in 1949, and became a licensed pharmacist. She married Yoshiaki (d. 2004) and then devoted her energies to homemaking and raising their five children. She enjoyed Japanese doll making; tea ceremony; and flower arranging. She was a certified instructor for the latter two art forms, and many people enjoyed her classes. Fumiyo also was an active volunteer for Lakeside Japanese Christian Church for many years.
She is survived by her children: Lynn (James) Themelis; Barry (Susan) Uchida; Diana (Charles) Hershfang; Alice (John Turner) Spaulding; and Charles (Lauree Rohrig) Uchida. She was a loving grandmother to Heather (Jason) Johnson; Kristin (Stevan) Young; Ian Spaulding; Rachel Spaulding; Jamie Hershfang; and the late Joelle Hershfang.
