Betty K. Tanakatsubo, 89 years, passed away peacefully on May 11th, 2015 in the presence of her devoted husband. Beloved wife of Sats (Fred), married 68-years. Loving mother of Niles (Myriam), Dr. Ramsey (Delight) and Stewart (Roberta) Tanakatsubo. Loving grandmother of Heidi, Guy, Kristen, Brian, Robert, Corri, Ciarra, Tad, and Ennio. Loving great-grandmother of Graeson, Emma, Riley, Corbin and Avery. Devoted sister of Dorothy Okita and Kaz Kaihara.
Born in Sacramento, California, Betty spent her childhood there until WWII when she and her family were interred in the Tule Lake Internment Camp, California. After being released from the Amache Internment Camp, Colorado, Betty worked in the WRA office in Cleveland, Ohio, where she met and married her husband Sats. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Chicago to start their family.
While raising their three sons, Betty and Sats were very involved in Japanese-American youth activities (Cub Scouts and Nisei Ambassador Drum and Bugle Corp). Betty and Sats loved to dance and were so graceful, they were nicknamed “Fred and Ginger”. Betty worked at AON Insurance and was the first Asian-American hired at the company when it was known as Combined Insurance. After retirement, they traveled extensively throughout the US, tours to Japan and China, and cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean and the Panama Canal.
Betty will forever be remembered by her family for her constant and unconditional love. She was always in a good mood no matter life’s challenges. Her warm welcoming smile and affectionate personality will be missed by all who knew her. No husband had a more devoted wife, no sons had a more loving mother.
