Messages

A lifelong sailor, Dr. O’Donovan learned to sail in Sligo, Ireland, on the Lake Isle of Innisfree. He completed 17 Chicago to Mackinac Races, won the Verve cup as captain of his yacht Fastnet, and enjoyed many a Wednesday night beer can race on Lake Michigan. He and his wife Mona were lifelong patrons of the symphony and opera and spent treasured time at the Cork Opera when they were first dating during their student days at UCC. They continued their love affair with music as patrons of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera of Chicago. After Mona's passing, it was through this love for the CSO that Dr. O'Donovan met his second wife, Carol Rauner. The new Dr. and Mrs. O’Donovan shared a passion for reading, classical music, and travel, bringing both of them great joy in the remaining years of their lives.
In his last years, Dr. O'Donovan traveled tirelessly to visit family. When travel was no longer possible, he spent his time reading, meditating on his faith, and keeping his home open for many visits by his children and grandchildren, to whom he has been a great inspiration. He will be greatly missed.
